Why Do My Legs Always Look Streaky After Tanning? (And How to Fix It)

Feb 18, 2026

If your arms look flawless but your legs tell a different story, you’re not alone. Streaky legs are one of the most common tanning frustrations - and usually the hardest area to perfect.

The good news? It’s rarely the tan. It’s the prep.

Here’s why it happens - and how to fix it.

Why Legs Go Streaky

Legs are naturally:

  • Drier than the rest of the body

  • Shaved more often

  • Prone to product build-up

  • Uneven in texture (thicker skin on knees, thinner around ankles)

All of this affects how tan develops. When skin isn’t balanced, tan grabs unevenly - leading to darker patches, streaks, and patchy fade.

The Most Common Causes

Dry Skin

Tan develops deeper on dry areas like shins and knees, causing uneven colour.

Shaving Too Close to Application

Shaving right before tanning can leave pores open and skin irritated, allowing tan to settle unevenly.

Skipping Primer

Applying tan directly onto dry or textured skin is one of the biggest mistakes. Primer smooths and lightly hydrates, helping tan glide on evenly rather than cling.

Using Too Much Product

More product doesn’t mean better colour — it often means more streaks. Thin, buildable layers always look smoother.

How to Get Smooth, Even Legs

1. Remove Old Tan Properly

Never layer fresh tan over build-up. Use our gentle tan removing shower gel a few days after application to reset your base.

2. Exfoliate at least 24 Hours Before

Exfoliate the day before tanning - not immediately before - to allow skin time to rebalance.

3. Shave in Advance

Ideally shave at least 24 hours before tanning to allow pores to close and skin to calm.

4. Prime Dry Areas

Apply primer to knees, ankles and any dry patches to create a smooth canvas.

5. Apply Lightly and Blend

Use long, sweeping motions and minimal product on joints. Blend carefully around ankles and knees for a seamless finish.

6. Hydrate Daily

Moisturised skin fades more evenly. Keep legs hydrated to prevent patchy breakdown.

The Secret to Non-Streaky Legs

It’s not about applying more tan - it’s about preparing better.

When your skin is smooth, balanced and lightly primed, your tan develops evenly and fades beautifully.

Flawless legs don’t start with the tan.

They start with the routine. 💛
